Quel dommage!

During my holidays on the Norman coast I used to wonder at the numerous façades of «Belle Epoque» houses decorated with wooden elements and painted in rather vivid colours.
Blue and white – the colours of the sea and of clouds moving in the blue sky- were predominant. This kind of architecture exists too in some English seaside resorts.

In the past they existed on the Belgian coast but many of them were destroyed and replaced by modern buildings… What a pity !

In a miniature fair in London, I spotted the kit of a house which exactly came up to my expectations for the creation of a fishmonger’s shop with a room upstairs.
In 2001 I created this house and organized the workshop.

I modified the inside in order to create a kitchen, a lounge, a bedroom and a bathroom.

Un coin du séjour
Small lounge area.

I wanted to create a flat of today, bright and fresh, like sea air with wood, wicker, natural materials and with here and there a touch of elegance : an needle point cushion on the chair, framed watercolour paintings, earthenware tiles around the sink…

Retour de la plage
Back from the beach.

The letter-writing and reading area.
On the yellow wall, model of a rowing boat with oars offered by Hervé a sea-lover.

For this fishmonger’s I designed « retro » furnishings but not too « retro ».
It’s a present-day shop and its charm comes from the old-fashioned elements it has.

Designing and building the aquarium was a bit of a challenge.
Placing the shellfish into the « water » had to be very cautiously but quickly done before it turned hard.

As I am not too good at working with Fimo, I bought many of the fish and seashells from expert miniaturists. I wanted the products to look as realistic as possible.

In the group one of my students, Claudine, observed the fish, seashells and other octopuses very carefully and then decided to produce them in small scale and to display them on the zinc shop counter.
Genuine very small seaweeds were used to display the seafood products.

Un magnifique choix de poissons fraîchement pêchés...
Range of freshly fished seafood products.

Another student, Françoise, made very realistic wire baskets and hampers in thin wood laths.

In front of the counter : baskets with mussels and bottles of wine displayed in a hamper.

The trestle in front of the shop indicates the prices of the seafood products. All you now have to do is enter the shop and buy all you need to get a delicious meal ready.

Shrimps, sardines, herrings, scallop shells and salmon terrine… It all makes my mouth water !

Nothing is better than a good bottle of wine to complement seafood.

Merci de votre visite, et à bientôt...

Thanks for coming and see you soon…
