Le Phare - The Lighthouse

Le Phare a été le thème du premier stage que j'ai organisé en 1998-99 dans le tout nouvel atelier installé dans ma maison.

J'avais repéré ce kit américain, et j'ai pensé que c'était un sujet original.
Il représente un phare comme on en trouve en Nouvelle-Angleterre.
Ce ne sont pas des phares de pleine mer, ils sont construits sur le continent, et souvent entourés de petits bâtiments annexes.

Ce phare a fait le bonheur des amoureux du Grand Large!
Il faut dire qu'il fait rêver à une mer sans fin, où se reflètent les nuages et les oiseaux qui volent vers l'horizon...
Plusieurs élèves du stage ont emmené leur phare au bord de la mer du Nord, ou de l'Atlantique.
D'autres sont restés sagement à Bruxelles, le mien est à la campagne, il y en a un qui est parti au Japon, un autre dans le sud de la France.... Que de destinations, pour un Phare de la Nouvelle-Angleterre!!!

The Lighthouse

The first classes I organized in 1998-99 in my brand-new workshop at home was for the lighthouse.

I had spotted this American kit and thought it could be an original topic. It represents a type of lighthouse which can be seen in New England. It is not the kind of lighthouse you see offshore but the kind which is built on the continent and is often surrounded by small outbuildings.

This lighthouse made our sea lovers happy.
It makes one dream of an endless sea in which the clouds and birds flying towards the horizon are reflected.

Some miniaturists took their lighthouse with them to the North sea or the Atlantic ocean, others kept it in Brussels. Mine is in my country house. One lighthouse is in Japan and another in the South of France. What nice destinations for a New England style lighthouse !!!

Le premier "challenge" a été l'électrification - en miniature - des 3 pièces d'habitation.
Je voulais pouvoir éclairer ces pièces comme on le fait dans une maison de poupées.
Le phare est équipé à l'origine d'une lampe - grandeur nature - qui en fait un éclairage d'appoint très joli, mais le problème était de combiner les deux circuits électriques et les faire "sortir" du phare de la manière la plus discrète possible.
La solution a été trouvée, et la construction du phare a pu commencer.

L'assemblage des pièces du kit n'a pas été simple, nos deux mains ne suffisant pas.
Les élèves ont travaillé deux par deux en s'aidant mutuellement dans cette phase délicate.
Comme le kit permettait l'aménagement de 3 pièces, nous avons pu donner libre cours à notre imagination pour faire de ce phare une habitation plus que décente, bien qu'un peu spartiate (lors d'expositions, plusieurs petits enfants m'ont demandé: "où sont les cabinets ?"...)

The first challenge was the small scale electrification of the 3 rooms. I was planning to light the rooms as we do it for a doll’s house. The lighthouse was originally equipped with a full-size bulb which gave a very nice soft light but the problem was to combine the 2 electric circuits and have the wires come out of the house as discreetly as possible. The solution was found and the building of the lighthouse could start.

Assembling the different parts of the kit wasn’t easy at all as one apparently needed more than 2 hands. The students had to work in pairs and help each other in this delicate part of the job. The kit had 3 rooms so we could give free rein to our imagination and transform the lighthouse into a decent place where to live though perhaps a bit ascetic (sometimes children asked me in fairs : « and where is the toilet ? »

J'ai choisi d'établir le bureau du gardien de phare au dernier étage, au milieu se trouve la chambre et au rez-de-chaussée, la cuisine-séjour.
Les meubles ont été créés dans le style Nouvelle-Angleterre, tant pour la forme que pour les couleurs.
Le bois domine à tous les étages, la "déco" est très simple et fonctionnelle, nous sommes dans un univers assez "masculin", c'est un phare tout de même!!!

I decided to place the lighthouse keeper’s study on the last floor. On the first floor came the bedroom and on the ground floor the kitchen-lounge. The furniture is New England style in shapes and colours.

Wood is predominant on each floor. The decoration is plain and functional. We are in a rather « men’s »world…don’t forget it’s a lighthouse.

Dans la chambre un peu austère, le couvre-lit en patchwork met une petite note de fantaisie...
In the rather ascetic bedroom, the patchwork bedspread gives a happy touch.
